Dead DIs and dead CATs

While in warranty, run the orginal, if it fails and kills the cat, then Saab pays for both.
Post warranty, run the new one and keep the old as a spare. If the DI failes suddenly at highway speeds, the cat can be killed very easily* and the cost of the dwarfs the cost of the DI. Post warranty, the risk of CAT death can be dealer costs for DI, downpipe/CAT, labor, taxes and tow truck. Often they replace just the DI and send you on your way, then the ECU takes a few days to decide that the CAT is really not working right... as seen by the 2nd O2 sensor.
* sudden DI death can imput large amounts of unburnt fuel into the cat and in a second or two the damage is done.
Saab has an extended 60K mile warranty on the DIs that is kept quite quiet, but I do not know or expect that Saab would replace the cat for free in that 50K-60K window.
If the DI looses some coils and the engine still runs, driving can easily destroy the cat. So never drive a missfiring vehicle. The arrangement of two cats, on very close to the turbo, makes cat death very much more likely to happen... compared to the NG900s that had the single cat below the oil pan. For those who replace their down pipes with 3" and one race or sports cat below the engine, that configuration might have a greater chance of surviving a dead cat event compared to stock. Someone was recently advised by the dealer to drive to the dealer with a CEL and misfiring. The DI caused the missfiring. The end result was that the downpipe/cat, O2 sensors and I think part of the exhaust system after that were trashed.
