Expect the worst, hope for the best Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Timing chain replace, what to expect?, saabrocket, Wed, 2 Feb 2005 18:45:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My first question would be, does it really have a bad timing chain? I'm assuming it isn't a broken one. If so, just replace the engine. Why do they think it's the timing chain?
The second question would be, 'why is the timing chain bad?' Contrary to popular belief, timing chains are pretty stout devices. Yes, there can be manufacturing defects, but one sure way to kill a timing chain is to under-lubricate it. That means running low on oil, or running with dirty, degraded oil. If that's true, then the timing chain is only the tip of the iceburg. Sludge buildup is a big issue with cars that have spotty oil changes. The sludge blocks the oil pump pickup, and reduces or cuts off oil pressure. If it's just been reducing oil pressure, most every rotating part, but mostly the bottom bearings, will be worn.
If it is just a very high mileage car, and the timing chain has worn out due to use, then I'd assume that the chain, sprockets, and guides need replacement. You can do it without removing the head, but it's safe to assume you should, so there's a head gasket in addition to the timing chain cover gasket (and valve cover gasket).
Since you need to pull a bunch of things off to access the chain, how old are the idler and belt tensioner pullies? I like replacing them every 60K miles. And if the water pump is off, well, might as well....
So my first question would be, is it really the timing chain? Do you know for sure? And second, why did it die?
