Replace cabin air filter Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 99' 9-5 SE, Aaron, Fri, 4 Feb 2005 09:52:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This assumes that the previous owner didn't have kids that took great joy in stuffing crayons into the rear heating vents.
I've found that many car smells can be addressed by replacing the cabin air filter. More than that, with the old filter out, I use a shop vac to clean the filter box. I've found filters that look like very old kitchen sponges, with things growing on them that look like they belong on Fear Factor. And quite often leaves and other debris gets into the filter box, and sits there and rots.
Most previously owned cars come with an aroma from the previous owner. One thing that can give off a powerful smell are many 'deodorizers', which are simply a way to overload your nose so you don't smell the cigarette smoke.
My recommendation - clean all hard surfaces with something like Armorall Cleaner - Not Armorall, just the cleaner. Clean and treat the leather, because it can trap smells. Get one of those refrigerator boxes of baking soda, and leave it behind the seats for a few weeks. And replace the cabin air filter. I'll bet the smell is gone in a week or so, with a big improvement once the filter is changed.
