I too viewed the alternator mount mount (and top rear engine mount) as something that needed to be removed to get the tensioner off. Thankfully I found the official instructions in my WIS before doing too much destruction.
The tensioner attaches to the engine via a single 8mm socket head cap screw which is located dead-center on the tensioner body. Depending on the length of your Allen wrenches, you may need to duplicate your 6mm effort with an 8mm wrench to remove the tensioner. Simply not enough room to work! I was barely able to remove the tensioner without modifying my Allen wrench. It is much easier to remove the pulley when the tensioner is sitting on your bench and not the engine!
