Not the same engine anymore! Working harder and the piston rings are now much closer to the piston crowns which makes the rings run hotter, if the rings then start to coke and stick, blowby gasses increase and this contributes to oil breakdown and polymerization. Also short trip and cold weather/climate related, so there is PCV/moisture issue as well. Cold pistons also allow for more blowby until warmed and running clearances are established. And maybe new gasoline formulations are creating a problem in the oil chemistry.
The older engines might have had much more open oil pickup screens that would allow the filters to capture crud instead of the screen blocking oil flow. The current screen does protect the pump, but kills the engine!
So one can argue all day about this, but most would conclude that the situation has changed.
