Would you put 10w-30 in an 01 Aero's manual gearbox? Because it's the same box as in my 95 NG900, with fairly minor changes, and the 95 NG900 took 10w-30 from the factory.
If I posted that here, most people would likely ask me if I was crazy. I'd hear about things like: Saab has released two new trans oils and plenty of TSBs outlining the use of better stuff in older equipment...that while the boxes are close, there's minor changes that make big differences for the oil. Everybody would probably tell me, without reservation, to use Saab's recommended trans oil.
But engine oil is an emotional thing. Saab has also changed the engine design ('low friction' ring arrangement) and released plenty of TSBs about oil quality, changed the factory fill, things that should (and are designed to) tell you something.
Personally, I use synth because some of my driving is unavoidably severe. I also use it because Chrysler, Toyota, VW, Audi and MB got their 'low-friction' engines to sludge up without even having PCV issues. Harder job, stronger oil.
