Internal engine observation from Saturday..... While replacing and torquing my headbolts Saturday I made a mental note of the pump drive system. The end of the cam is slotted and the pump shaft has a tang which engages the slot.
What caught my attention was how sloppily the tang fit into the cam slot. Just eye-balling the fit I would estimate my car has 1/16-inch of lash at this drive point! I didn't see any evidence of metal shavings in the area or mushrooming of either the cam slot or tang indicating metal-to-metal wear. It just looked as if it is a very sloppy fit.
Based on my observations, this drive connection could very well be the source of your noise.
Has anyone else noticed this on their cars? I may need to replace my pump if the slot/tang is intended to be a tight fit.
