PCV line from valve cover to oil trap split

In the process of disassembling the engine to replace my failed belt and pulleys I found that the PCV line from the valve cover to the oil trap had a large split in it, and the inside looked absolutely terrible - crumbling and slimy. I replaced it, and the car seems to idle more smoothly (of course the new belt and pulleys probably didn't hurt).
Frankly I'm surprised the CEL wasn't on as a result of the PCV leak. I am a bit curious about 1) why the hose was so badly degraded after 6 years and 100k miles (I would expect some deterioration, but not like this; the other hoses don't seem to be soft, and aren't split), and 2) where any of the bits of rubber might have gotten themselves to. I'm going to pull the valve cover and replace the head bolts as soon as Eeuroparts sends them to me, so I'll get a look in there while its apart, but I'm wondering if I should pull the oil trap as a precautionary measure.
