Dean, I've had 4 cars with the rear parking brake where the piston rotates out of the cylinder to stay self adjusted. I experienced problems with 3 of the 4, which resulted in the brakes dragging slightly and 0n one the rotor got eaten up.

On the other hand I've had no problems with the hat style design, but I live in Denver, where there is low humidity year round.

Comment on the engine failures from sludge, I too believe it is a combo of various factors, poorly designed/inadequate PVC system, Saab foolishly recommending oil change intervals at BMW intervals, extra heat from the engine and location of cat, and the overall downsizing of the engine resulting in less oil capacity as well as overall internal space. I had a 1986 9000T which had out of the factory, even within 2 psi compression readings at 220k miles. But this 2.0 L engine seemed bigger in external dimensions, PVC hose diameter, and coolant hoses. It also lived in an engine compartment more spacious and conducive to air circulation.
