Here's my 2 cents: I have owned two Saabs (1984 900 turbo and 2001 9-5 2.3t) and one Volvo (1998 S70). I have loved all three cars, BUT...

The Volvo was ROCK SOLID. No major issues through 90K miles (when I sold it). Few minor issues. I did regular maintenance, and it drove great. Even the clutch held out over 90K of city/suburb driving. Arguably the best car I have everowned. As reliable as the 1995 Accord EX I also owned. Would buy another Volvo in a heartbeat.

I had some big issues on the 900: turbo gone at 48K, clutch died at 60K, water pump, steering rack, master cyl, alternator, etc. Loved the car, but it was not reliable. Okay, it's an older experience, I know, and many of the demons are gone.

That said, I love my current 9-5, and I adored the 900 Turbo. But, there was/is ALWAYS something wrong with them. Little niggling stuff for now on the 9-5 (49K mi). I am waiting for the shoe to drop, though. And frankly, the fact that many of us feel it is okay to carry an extra DI around in the trunk means two things: we accept these issues, AND GM needs to get its s*&t together on reliability with Saabs. Sane people wouldn't put up with this, would they?

While I clearly like Saabs, I think that GM/Saab need to get their stuff together and do a better job of bulletproofing their cars.

And I am NOT that loyal to Saab (as I think many of us are -- are you reading this Saab?). The minute the 9-5 starts giving me fits, it's off to the auction and into an Infiniti or Lexus (or even Volvo). I consider the 9-5 to be a second chance to change my skittishness about owning a Saab. Love the car, afraid of reliability demons.

Just my 2 cents...
