the cassette adapter is actually more of a 'direct connection' than FM modulation. That does of course sound better, most people don't like that due to the fact that there's a wire hanging out of the cassette slot...no biggie as I see it.
But I installed an mp3 changer in my 9-5 and I tested ripping everything from 192kbs > 320kbps and also as a direct .wav file. With FM modulation, it did kill sound quality quite a bit. On the home stereo they sound pretty much identical to the CD itself.
I had to take it out because I just wasn't happy listening to it knowing that it could sound better. Not saying that this is the case for everybody as some people are fine with it no matter how it sounds. I personally have always been into audio and the FM modulation just didn't suit my expectations.
If it works for you or anyone else...great! That's all that matters, but it is a personaly preference.
