Here is what the first thing you should have done!
1. Call and check if the other person has legitimate insurance and a License.
2. Anything over $500, the other person will start to think that you are being extravagent and fixing other things that were not damaged by him/her.
3. Unless you have a police report and other witnesses I will not trust the other party to pay or even admit that it was their fault.
Just my .02 cents... I recently had this happen to wify as someone hit her from behind. At first he pleaded to pay and not to call the police, Then he did a switch-a-roo on her as he did not have a license or insurance. As luck would have it a policeman passing thru stopped to check if everything at the scene was okay and the driver said that he was not driving and it was his wife. But as SHE was not at the scene he said that she has gone to make a phone call while everyone waited. Long drama before and after but thats for another time... Thank GOD for UNinsured motorist Insurance.
