engine dies instantly, oil pressure guage

On my '99 9-5 3L LPT yesterday I was driving 65 - 70 mph, everything fine and then without warning the engine just dies. I coast to a stop, try starting it again and no go. After I get pushed to the outside of the freeway by a highway patrol car and am waiting for the tow truck I try starting it again. It starts this time and I drive it home, everything appears to be fine outside of the check engine light is on constant, nothing on the SID. This morning (as of course the car fails just when it's getting dark and cold in the winter) I try it again and it starts right up. The check engine light is again on and I also notice the oil pressure guage is not showing anything. I shut the car off, the oil level is fine and I only changed it 2K ago.
My question is, is there some computer function that signals to kill the engine if the oil pressure drops as a engine safety precaution? If so, why would it let me start it now? I'm guessing that my problem is the oil pressure sending unit, any suggestions? I couldn't find anything on this with previous postings and I'm sorry if there was and I didn't use the right search string. I don't have any of the oil smell or smoke like others have reported with oil pressure sending unit problems.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
