I just finished the hunt for a used SAAB tonight. Settled on a silver 2002 Linear sedan with the premium package (ESP, mem seats, etc.) with 36k miles for $16,500. I drove all three variations (Linear, Arc, Aero), 02s and 03s. Here's my thoughts:
The Aero had the best seats and a fabulously smooth power delivery from that high turbo 4. The ride was just a little to rough for us. Felt too many of the pavement cracks even. Not jarring just to much road feedback.
The Arc with the 6 cylinder was smooth at idle, no steering wheel vibration and had a little better power coming off a dead stop. Beyond that it didn't feel that much more powerful than the Linear's 4. Felt a little heavier on cornering.
The Linear is just a bit slow from a dead stop but otherwise has no problems moving with a tap on the accelerator. It feels just a bit more light on it's feet (a good thing) than the 6 cylinder.
I had a 1999 6 cyl 9-5 that we had great luck with (lease return at 42k miles)so I don't have any qualms about it being a non-SAAB engine unlike some of the various used car dealers out there.
The only big 02 to 03 difference I noticed was the color of the wood on the dash. I guess thats just a personal preference. If I had a choice I would take the burled walnut from the 99-01 Saabs over the 02 or 03 colors.
Once I settled on the Linear, I specifically looked for one with the Luxury or Premium group so I would get the ESP function. That was still optional in 2002. Standard on 03.
That's all I have. Good luck in your search.
Tom
