Low compared to what?... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 22 Feb 2005 14:58:50 In Reply to: Re: Feedback '03-'04 9-5, Ivan, Tue, 22 Feb 2005 05:25:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That's one of the disadvantages to the incentivized style of marketing Saab uses. The resale may seem low compared to the original MSRP, but in comparison to the actual prices the car sells for when new, it's very good-average and very much in line with other manufacturers.
So any comparison of resale values inevetiably refers to the percentage of the original sticker which puts Saab in an unfair light as Saabs don't sell for anwhere near the original MSRP, unlike some other German brands. Saab's have incentives or rebates, other brands don't. When you factor in the rebates, Saab resale is good-average.
The German brands and models that compare and tout their resale don't really depreciate less because they cost so much more to begin with. Retained percentage of MSRP doesn't tell the whole resale story.
There were up to $7,000 in incentives alone, to say nothing of a dealer discount, on 2004 9-5's. That's the dilemma, folks see the $40k+ window sticker and compare the resale to that instead of the actual mid-low $30's selling price. Put another way, before you buy a 1 or 2 year old used Saab, make sure you know what you can get a new one for.
