You've made a great choice! If I was in the market for a car today, the Outback GT (5spd) would be my choice. My wife has the 2005 Forester XT (5spd). Traded our 2003 BMW 325xi (5spd) for it.
Todays Subaru's are a far cry over anything Subaru built just 2 years ago. If the XT was available "back when" that's what I would be driving now.
Fuel mileage is less than the SAAB. You'll see around 23mpg in mixed driving. I get around 27 in my 9.5 Aero (combined).
I doubt your Overall costs (in the long run) will be that much less than SAAB. Subies are prone to leak, gaskets and seals (front main seal, rear main seal, head gaskets etc.). Also their oil change schedule is for 7.5K oil changes, and 3.75K oil changes for "severe duty".
Great car! Good luck.
