Thanks for the great comments!
Just to fill you in a little more - in addition to our SAAB, we have a '93 Subaru Legacy AWD Turbo which we have owned since new. It has 130K on the odometer and has been rock solid in terms of reliability - a cv joint here and there but otherwise routine. No, it doesn't have the refinement of the SAAB, however, it has been highly entertaining, very capable in the snow (far more so than even the SAAB with 4 studded snow tires!), and has NEVER, in 12 years of ownership left us stranded. We have essentially been driving for 8 years without car payments and just paying for maintencance, fuel and tires. I have driven the car in a 'spirited' fashion at times, enjoying the pull of the turbo and all four wheels scrambling for traction.
I found the 2005 Legacy GT Wagon fairly refined (certainly NOT to SAAB levels), and an absolute hoot to drive. The acceleration is actually shocking and the handling is definitely on-par if not better than my SAAB. The safety ratings for the redesigned Subies are excellent.
As much a I have enjoyed our SAAB (its ergonomics, design, style, comfort and road feel), my enjoyment was tempered with fears of large unexpected repairs, high maintenance and parts costs and the several significant repairs it had under warranty (including the entire turbo unit at 43K - what happens in another 40K - my cost!). I'll be sorry to see our SAAB go but I am excited about the new Subie.
Good luck to you all. Someday I'll be back - but I'll be on another BB - for a 900 SPG - a car I have always wanted to own.
Take care,
David
