Recommended maintenance is inadequate Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Bad maintenance = Bad Engine and Turbo's..., BAD ENGINE, Thu, 24 Feb 2005 15:34:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The problem does not lie in Saab engines or design, in my opinion. The recommended oil change interval is too great, period. Should Saab be held liable for recommending too long an interval? I'll leave that up to the Lawyers and the Automotive Gods. It's hard to blame someone for following the recommendations in the manual. But it isn't an engine design issue. With oil changes at the 'harsh service' intervals, the cases of sludge would drop dramatically.
For a variety of reasons, most car manufacturers have gone to extended oil change intervals. The 'get out' clause is that those extended intervals are for 'normal service'; harsh service requires shorter intervals. Upon a close read, most folks drive under the definition of harsh service.
There are no marked differences in Saab engines for the past 20 years. But the oil change interval has gone up. Yes, oils are better. But I think the 10K interval is totally inadequate.
Do a Google search on "Toyota" and "Sludge". You'll get 23,200 hits. There is no definitive answer, but all evidence points to Toyota's 7500 mile oil change interval. Honda, Ford, all the major manufacturers are dealing with Sludge.
