Adam,
I don't think DIC failures are minor problems at all. When they fail, you do nowhere. A minor failure would be a headlight going out or the raido not working. Anytime a problem causes the car to not work I consider that a major failure.
I think the issue isn't so much the DIC failing, rather, we all know the DIC is the weakest thing in an otherwise great car. Sure, it's easily changed. Sure, you can carry a spare but why should we have to? It's a problem which can be fixed with a design change. Ok, they can't do much about the Saab I've got but it's not like this is a new problem. Seems like Saab has had this problem for YEARS. When are they going to fix it?
Sure, it's great if you're under warranty. But what if you're not? Or, better yet, what if you're in the middle of nowhere (as I frequently go) and there are NO Saab dealers in the area or, worse yet, no cell phone service. Now, of course, this would be a problem no matter what failure you would have but DICs have been failing for everyone. And again, this failure stops the car in its tracks. It's a known problem which should have been addressed years ago.
I love my Saab--it's my 3rd one. However, I've owned MANY other kinds of cars and I NEVER had to consider keeping a $300 part as a spare along with me. Not on cars with relatively low mileage or cars with high mileage. I shouldn't have to worry about carrying a spare like this around with me.
Why has saab ignored the pleas from owners to fix the DIC issue? Well, probably because it's not been a terribly popular car until the last few years. However, now that it's a more popular car, why aren't they fixing the new models???
I can totally understand why someone would look at another car.
