as part of the repairs to my 70000 mile Aero that had a cam sprocket fail, we decided to drop the oil pan as a precaution. We were so close anyway, why not? So did I find all kinds of sludge? In a word: no. Maybe the equivalent of a table spoon of sludge, which to me is totally insignificant. We also inspected the oil pick-up screen. There was a slight amount of very small carbon chunks which were covering maybe 1% of the screen surface, again, perfectly normal, and insignificant. So, back to my cam sprocket failure, that's exactly what it was, the cam sprocket broke, period. Nothing else caused it or contributed to the problem. Post mortem closed.
I don't know how this sludge problem that's getting so much concern developes, other than a total lack of oil changes. I change oil every 5k. Just wanted to share this, as I don't think too many on this board go this deep into their engines. Hope this gives some of you some piece of mind!
