Other possible contributors to sludge and other issues, other than neglected oil changes or crappy oil:
Sludge might have a connection to loose head bolts and some gases leaking at peak combustion chamber pressures. Those gases would be a mess from a chemical point of view. For this to be true, the gases would have to leak to the oil passages, not the coolant. If this was happening, this would also explain the problems with excess crankase pressures. Blowby gases getting past stuck piston rings would also be a similar problem. This is all speculation. But somehow, I cannot let go the thought that the head bolts and the oil chemistry and excessive blowby gas problems are not related in some cases. As for the PCV problems, changing the the PCV is just getting a bigger bucket, not fixing the leak in the boat. The PCV is the symptom, not the cause. The cause is whatever is creating excessive blowby gas volumes. So that can be the head gasket, valve stems or piston rings. Of course, a bad check PCV check valve that allows the turbo to pressurize the crankcase would be a serious problem.
And with sludging, cold short trips and condensation will form acids that take part in the chemical changes to the oil.
