Versatility was to be my point, having had a 9000 with the Saab sedan style fixed point mount, and now a wagon with roof rails and Saab crososbars. (Yes, Thule makes them all for Saab).
Advantage of the rails and Saab bars; the crossbars can be placed any distance apart on the rails. That is particularly important if you buy one of those Thule boxes that has fixed indentations for the crossbars to fit in.
Advantages of the fixed Saab sedan style bars; they are a little easier to mount, no measuring required (only if you are a perfectionist), they don't migrate, and there are no keys to keep track of (they are locked in place when your doors are locked).
I use the crossbars for bike racks and kayaks. I discovered that after tying three kayaks down a few times on their sides on top of my wagon, the downward force had pushed the bars apart. The Saab sedan style are cleaner looking but the roof rail mounted bars are more versatile.
