saying that saabs are one ofthe toughest cars to steal reaffirms my point. It is not the hunk of metal you carry in your pocket that makes them so, it is electronics. You also need to keep a bit of humility and rememv=ber that another reason that they do not get stolen a lot is that the demand for hot parts from them is not as high as a Camry or Accord. That is the reason cars get stolen ,remember? Hot parts. airbags, headlights, all that stuff.
A number og high end cars use smart card technology already, so Saab would not be pioneering anything to so this. The pioneering has already been done. Most experts would tell you that electronics, with things like rolling code technology, provides a level of security far more advanced than a slab of metal with dimples or jagged edges in it. And regarding safety in an accident, not only would full electronic access eliminate the key from impaling your knee or anything like that, but it's location on the dashboard would not have to be dictated by conventional design ideas, like the steering column. Personally,I do not believe that in serious crashes the key is the reason for serious injury. Not saying that Saab just made it up, but perhaps they had other reasons for putting the key in the floor and decided that possible injury from the column sounded good. I'm still not buying it. A ton of other things on our cars are run by electronics now with high reliability and for me, the key is ready to be retired, along with the manual choke and spark advance!
