I agree. I love the current door handles on my '01 9-3, which are the same as the 9-5's.
Its possible to get plenty of leverage on the handle, even with thick mittens. And, it seems to me, they would provide a good hold for a hook should it be necessary to pull open a jammed door after an accident.
Occasionally a passenger has trouble with the door handles, especially the rear ones. My inlaws, who are all short, had difficulty at first.
It seems some people pull straight out rather than up and out (some even pull down n' out -- those would be my inlaws.. ha ha). They lean away from the car wondering why the door won't open... until you flip the handle UP.
