Like a lot of the others say, the need for 3K or even 5K oil change intervals is an artifact of bygone times.

But I know how you feel, like you, I was disturbed at the color of my engine oil when I first bought the car. I later learned from maintenance records that the provious oil change had been 7K miles previous and well within the recommended 10K interval. It's my belief that turbocharged cars discolor oil faster than their non-turbocharged counterparts. Even after Gunk flushes, and use of detergent additives, new oil still darkens quickly.

Today's cars burn much cleaner than the those of 30 years ago and beyond. That's about when car companies stopped producing engines that required leaded gas. There are also those who can make a case than dino oil is better in cars that do a lot of stop and go driving. But that's for another discussion.

I've never had major engine failures in my vehical -and some have served me or 200K miles using a 7500 mile oil change interval. Since switching to full synthetics 6 years ago, I'm told I could stretch it out a lot further but haven't -probably for the same irrational reasons others insist on maintaining a 3K interval.

To check for sludge though, you might consider removing the camshaft cover. That's what my dealer does to check for sludge. And while you have it off you can check your head bolt torque. Couldn't hurt with a new-to-you vehicle.
