How to Check for Sludge???

So I just bought my 01 Aero last month CPO from a respected dealer. I got the maintenance records with the purchase. It had 45,000 miles on it. The other day I was changing the plugs (Im anal about spark plugs) and checked the oil. I was horrified at the condition of the oil! It was the blackest nastiest oil I have ever seen! Come to find out, they did all the re-conditioning that they told me (belts, hoses, tires, brakes, and battery) but since it was in between oil changes they did not touch that. I am pissed at this point, since it had 6000 miles on that oil, which is absolutely rediculous if you ask me (and dont get me started on the 10k interval listed in the owners manual). I immediately changed it out for some fresh M1 and a new filter. I plan on changing it again in 500 or so miles (hopefully to "flush" the system out.)
Now my question is, do I worry about sludge? How the heck do I check for sludge? And if I do have sludge, how do I approach the dealer about cleaning it out.
Also, what the heck are these manufacturers thinking with the change intervals? My nieces Saturn recommends 7500 miles. My brothers Mini recommends 10000. SAAB recommends 10k. I know of no oil that I would even contemplate using for 5k. This is absurd.
Thanks in advance!
