My wifes BMW calls for 15K mile intervals :-).
Quote: "I know of no oil that I would even contemplate using for 5k. This is absurd".
Have you ever performed an oil analysis to back up your claim of absurdity? 3K oil changes are the result a decades long marketing scam on the US citizens! The use of modern synthetic PAO oils negates the 3K mile oil change. You can safely go 10K miles if you're lucky enough not to have to commute in stop and go traffic (which I thankfully am). I run 10K oil changes in my car because:
1. I don't worry about rush hour traffic in Maine.
2. I live on the coast and don't see temp's as low as the Upper Mid West.
3. I use at least Group III/IV, PAO oil's with great TBN.
4. I have performed oil analysis's that can back up 10K oil changes in the SAAB, and 15K oil changes in the BMW.
5. Even at these intervals I am throwing away good oil, with penty of TBN, and low wear metals, but I don't want to go over the manufacturers recommended intervals.
Relax, keep your eye on your oil. I've been changing my oil at 10K for years now with no ill effects (on turbo cars as well). I use my cars for at least 150K miles, and when I get rid of them, the engines are far from worn out!
