Pretty normal, actually Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 7 Mar 2005 13:23:43 In Reply to: Acid out of battery, TonyStarks, Mon, 7 Mar 2005 13:15:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Batteries normally vent a little bit of vapor, and that vapor contains some acid. There is also some normal electrolytic action at the battery post, and that results in the white powder.
Yes, your dealer is right in saying that he would see it Saabs all the tiem. What he didn't say is it is common on ALL car batteries. Nothing special about Saabs. It has NOTHING to do with all the power equipment - the battery only supplies power during starting - the alternator provides all the car's power needs when it is running. And the power consumption with the car off is minimal - not zero, but not a lot. And again, it's pretty similar for all modern cars.
Wipe it off with a wet paper towel. If you want to be very fancy, mix up a little baking soda in water, and use that to wipe it down. Sears, and probably every autoparts in the world sell little fiber washers that you can put down on the battery posts (remove the clamp first). These washers are impregnated in chemicals that inhibit the formation of the powder.
Very common.
