So I am a young professional a couple of years removed from college. Having a good job and finally some money I set out to find a nice, safe yet somewhat reliable european car. After a lot of research I chose a 1999 9-5 with 45k miles from a private european auto dealer. Having done my research I was well aware that Saabs, being the quirky cars that they are, have their issues and are always going to be a bit more to repair and maitain than the average car. This was a sacrifice that I thought I was willing to make. I've had some minor issues but nothing out of the ordinary..until now.
After having my speedometer go out and my dash light up like an X-mas tree (brake, TCS, ABS,/!\ lights), I took it to the dealership for a diagnosis. The estimate...a whopping $3000 dollars for a new ABS Control Module. Are you kidding me? This must rank pretty GD high on a ranking of parts cost list. Now I know stuff happens, cars break down need repairs. However this is a non-wear part on a still fairly low mileage vehicle. I don't even realize how something like this becomes inoperable. Does it just ..poof!!..and stop working? After expressing my concern, I was told that a call was made to Saab and there is nothing that can be done to help out on the cost. I mean, I do alright for myself, but $3k is a lot of cheddar to come up with to get your car back in working order. I know people on the board have posted about having this problem, but can anyone recommend a course of action? (i.e. used part dealer, contacting Saab, suicide?).
I always laugh when I see people fighting with their manuafacturer over a repair, but to me this seems like recall material if it's happening to enough cars. It just seems like a part that should not fail. Maybe I'm naive, maybe this will just be a lesson learned or maybe Sweden just hates me.
