You will need the following tools to perform this job:
1) a set of ramps
2) a floor jack with a block of scrap 2x6 or similar
3) a torque wrench
4) a 12-inch long 1/2-inch socket extension of piece of 1/2-inch steel bar stock ($1 at Home Depot)
Steps to replace:
1) Drive car onto ramps, and remove the plastic shield from under the engine area. Five torx head screws hold it on, one of them is in the right-hand wheel well but you can reach around the tire to get at it.
2) Position floor jack under the oil pan with scrap block of wood on jack saddle. Lift jack until is is snugged securely against the oil pan.
3) Remove plastic engine cover, it clips to the oil fill neck.
4) Remove the four bolts securing the upper right engine mount yoke to the engine. These will be retightened later to 40 ft-lbs. Remove the clamp holding one coolant hose to the engine mount yoke. Remove the one nut securing the engine mount yoke to the isolation block mounted on the inner fender. This will later be retightened to 80 ft-lbs. Then remove yoke from engine compartment.
5) Locate the belt tensioner assembly on the back side of the engine and notice the square boss receptacle cast into its top. Using the 1/2-inch socket extension or piece of bar stock, place one end in the square boss and pull the other end towards the radiator to release tension on the belt. Slide the belt off one pulley, then carefully release the tensioner assembly to its resting position.
5) Remove belt from all pulleys.
6) Remove old top idler pulley and replace with new part! This pulley spins at 3 to 4 times engine speed and simply won't last an additional 60,000 miles. (~$45 for this pulley)
7) Inspect pulley on tensioner assembly, replace if necessary. This pulley spins slower and can last until the second belt change. (also ~$45 but a different pulley)
8) If using a long belt, (i.e. original factory length), inspect the center idler pulley for wear. This is a bugger to replace! I strongly suggest you use the new short belt option and so you never have to touch this pulley! Like the tensioner pulley, this one can last until the second belt change if its in good condition and you are using a long belt.
9) Install your new belt following routing diagram on package or part supplier's web site. Remember, the short belt by-passes the center idler pulley.
10) Reverse steps #5 to #1.
My instructions probably make belt replacement sound far more difficult than what it really is.
Enjoy!
