Modern clutches don't slip when they get old and the hydaulic linkages keep them in decent adjustment, but at some point they don't disengage very well. The pressure plate clutch fingers get goofy and they don't release very well, and that causes great difficulty engaging gears from neutral. You'd think it was a tranny problem when it's just an old clutch.
