No. Only damage has been to the available power from the engine, and only while burning the lower octane fuel. Saab's engine management system will adjust boost and spark timing to avoid permanent damage to engine. I run 92/93 octane when daily temperatures can be expected to shoot above 85 degrees (May thru Sept) and 89 octane the rest of the year. My particular car's engine performance seems to be very sensitive to the 85 degree point.
Check your gas cap. The Owner's Manual says to tighten it until you hear three clicks. A loose cap (or one with a bad gasket) will cause an engine warning light. A lot of other things can cause the engine light too, some serious and some not. Did they run any diagnostics to find the reason for the light?
