Hi,

It's time for a new inspection sticker which requires that I finally replace my cracked windshield. My vehicle is a 2000 9-5 Aero, 4D

I have the following quote from a local shop:
$225 installed, using Safelite glass
$256 installed, using PPG glass

First, any comments about Safelite vs PPG?

Second, are there some pitfalls with glass replacement that I should avoid. Another shop quoted $337 for PPG installed - an $80 price difference - this seems a lot. Are there some corners that some shops cut to keep their prices low, that I should be aware of? Are there pieces which I should INSIST upon being replaced? The tech on the phone, mentioned that his computer screen was telling him that some molding/piece from my original windshield would be reused. I'm not sure what he's talking about, so could anyone offer any comments here. I asked this question to another shop who told me that my car didn't have a molding, that my car's windshield comes bonded with a piece, so there is no separate molding. Conflicting responses. Given the large # of cars on the road, I won't fault them too much for not knowing the exact details of my obscure car.

Third, are there any replacement parts that I should insist should be OEM?

Fourth, how do people feel about mobile windshield repair? Should I stay with a shop that does repairs on site (inside a garage), where conditions are more controlled, or am I worrying too much about this.

Fifth, the shop who quoted me these prices is Windshield Rescue in Arlington, VA. Any comments on them / their workmanship - feel free to private email me kevinhorgan1 $at$ yahoo.com if you'd prefer to keep those comments offline.

Thanks,

KevinH
