The only way to beat the depreciation game is to not pony up to the bar very often. You know you will take a big hit over the first few years with whatever you're driving, especially if you put big miles on it. Plus in most states, you'll pay the tax hit, too.

The bimmer will get hit for more $$, and will probably give you an insurance bounce to boot. Check it first, so it isn't a surprize. Saabs do pretty well on that category.

If you drive it for the long term, you will average off lower depreciation on the back side. For example, book value on my '99 9-5 w/135K on it is probably $5-$6K. Paid $13K for it almost exactly 3 years ago; or approx $2500/year depreciation driving about 19k miles/year. Even if the depreciation rate is stable, as the value drops over time, the actual depreciation cost's decline. Yes, there is maintenance to balance things off, especially with the bimmer or the saab. In addition, here we get hit for some pretty good taxachusett premiums when you buy a car.

My car is much less new looking than when I bought it (Sorry Lou), but it gets lots of miles, and I still like it a lot, for the same reasons as when I bought it. At 135k miles, I'm still trying to justify the ecu upgrade to match the aero suspension....!

FWIW, I drove the last Acura I had to 200K miles and sold it for $500. Paid $13k for it, and drove it 150K miles over 8 years for about $1625/year depreciation. One of the guys in my office has a BMW 328 with about 250k on it now. I drove it when it was new to him, and REALLY missed the saab. The 328/330's are tight if you do long drives... or work in the car.
