They don't really break much but the maintenance can be costly. Preventative maintenance that is. Luckily, our 2002 9-5 came with the scheduled maintenance built in which was nice. The 9-5 is most likely the most trouble-free european car. The new 9-3 was released a little early in my opinion which has given the 9-3 much lower reliability ratings. It will go back up as the design matures.
We have a 1999 9-3 and 2002 9-5 Aero. I'm at 96K miles onmy 9-3 and have only had things like brakes, belts, tires, and part of the exhaust that got crunched when some kid rear-ended me. The 2002 Aero is still like new and we've only done regular maintenance. We have to pay $ for every other oil change.
If you get one with 60K miles, make sure that the serpentine belt and tensioner pulley have been replaced. That's about the lifespan of those.
