I bought a 2000 9-5 Aero with 84k miles exactly one year ago. It's been a great car. I just turned over 100k about a week ago.
In the year I've owned the car, I've replaced the DI cassette, the rear shocks, the SID (Saab Information Display), and the thermostat.
Altogether this has cost about $1200 - which might seem steep for the first year of ownership, yet the car itself still drives like new. As many on the board have noted, the 9-5 is generally very reliable, and its weak spots tend to be easily fixed without too much expense.
Some here complain about the DI cassette going without warning, but my DI cassette gave me plenty of warning - an occasional "check engine light" in October, that started coming back about once every 3-4 days in February.
IMHO the most important thing to check is regular maintenance. If the oil has been changed on a regular basis, Saabs can and will last a very long time.
My 9-5 Aero is an absolutely incredible car, and I would have bought it even knowing what I know now (in particular, given that all of the known 9-5 issues are now dealt with).
