I've had 5 9-5's since they came out in 1999. Two have been Aero's -- 01 and 04, two have been Arc's -- 99 and 00 (all purchased new) and just bought a 99 lpt with 110K miles.
Two have been wagons and three have been sedans.
Great cars in any version, new or used. Favorite is the wagon.
Have also had four 9-3's during this period and an older 9000.
If you are counting, that is eleven Saabs.
My advice to Saab owners is this. Heat is the Saab's Achillees' heel. The turbos make this brand really hot under the hood. The manufacturer has made this problem more acute by first using dino oil, then moving to semi-synth and finally to synthetic oil as Saab has learned the problems high heat and long oil intervals create.
Do yourself a favor. Get Amsoil and put it in your car. It is the only oil I have found that can really take the heat these engines put out. It is far better at taking the heat than even Mobil 1. Amsoil will prevent the sludge that many owners complain about (I lost two engines using dino or semi-synth oil that sludged).
Amsoil may very well make your engine run twenty degrees cooler than using Mobil 1. Reducing the heat, I believe will pro-long the DI cassette which commonly fails due to excess heat and common throttle body failure which has probably been due to excess heat as well. Electronics and heat don't go together.
Why have I owned eleven? The second Saab I bought, a 1999 9-3, saved my daughter's life in a head on collision at night. The other driver (drunk, high on cocaine, headed north in the southbound lanes of traffic without headlights) was killed instantly. Both vehicles impacted (offset) at about 65 mph. My daughter walked away with a sprained ankle.
Isn't this the best family car recommendation you could have?
