FYI-I had XM originally and switched to Sirius because I prefer the progamming there over XM. If you're into sports, Sirius is the way to go. I also think Sirius has a bit better classical and Jazz stations as well as some other stations XM doesn't have.
As far as sports, Sirius has NFL football, NCAA Tournament, NBA basketball, soccer (I believe), Nascar and a few other things. XM, to my knowledge, has Major League Baseball and Nascar. They may have added other sports though so don't quote me on that.
Also, with Sirius, you get a discount when purchasing just one year of service. Unless XM has changed, you must purchase 2 years to get a discount. With the way things change I'm not comfortable getting any more than one year. I had XM for a year and found I liked Sirius better. Things could always change...
With that said, you're right about the Saab solution, pretty pricey. You can look into the XM Commander, which will allow you to have a clean install while hiding the actual receiver. You can find those on eBay and installation isn't all that hard if you're somewhat handy.
If you deceide on Sirius, you can go with the new Starbase. They just released it and it's gotten great reviews. I plan to get one for my 9-5 this summer.
Don't mean to trash XM, just wanted to give you my take on it since I've now had both systems.
