There have been a LOT of discussions about this on the various car boards I frequent. There have also been a few actual lab tests on filtration vs. airflow. Based on the latter, suffice it to say that there is no way I'm putting a K&N or any other oiled gauze-type filter in any car I own. Foam filters (good multi-layer ones - not all filter foam is created equal) or OEM paper are the only things that will hold very fine particulate matter well.
As to airflow, it's a simple question of surface area and flow/sq.inch. If you had a car with a small filter element that was marginal to engine air requirements, maybe the K&N or other type would help. The 9-5 filter looks to have more than enough surface area to flow any amount of air any stock 9-5 version might require through an OEM paper filter.
