I agree that the stock filter doesn't seem to be lacking in surface area. I changed mine at 30k "just because," but the old one seemed quite clean for such a well-used air filter. I don't think anybody questions that a paper element is good at filtering out fine particles, I have my suspicions about some of the foam filters I've examined.
I'd guess the best way to improve airflow on a 9^5 would be to reroute the ducting. The stock setup must have the air traveling ten feet before getting to the engine, and through lots of bends and curves. What do the performance shops do about this?
