I also have an '01 and drive the back roads of rural Maine frequently (along with the potholes of "urban" Maine). No problem with the standard 16" alloy wheels. I also use 15" steel wheels and snow tires in winter, which work great. Don't know if you'd find an all season tire that's acceptable in winter, I haven't tried. One reason I didn't consider the aero was concern about the wheels and tires for the driving I do, along with the low clearance.
