b) You are correct that each half inch of rim adds .2 to the tire section ... but of course, only *half* that is on each side, or .1" added to threaten clearance to the struts.
As pointed out by Brooks G, Some of Saab's accessory wheels were 17X8, this on a 225 45 17 tire, with no problems. If your "plus zero" tire is 225-50-16, the 7 1/2 tire will be no problem as well. What you want to do is cross check the cross section of the tire you wish to purchase with the "measuring rim" width and add the appropriate correction according to the actual rim width. 225mm on a half-inch over-wide rim is a guaranteed fit.
