It's a tough call and a difficult sell to the customer.
The timing belt cost scenario gets so out of hand if you want to do it "the right way" and it might be difficult to upsell a water pump and engine seals and coolant thermostat and serpetine belt and idler pulleys.
"The right way" is also a vague expression since parts on cars don't wear out in the same speed on all cars.
At 60,000 miles the water pump is probably still good but will it make it to 120K? We don't know. At 120K I definetly think it is a good idea to have it replaced and also the engine seals and coolant thermostat, but all this brings the cost up over $1000.00.
If a customer call around for pricing and the dealer only quote the price for doing timing belt alone and nothing more (around $300.00) and the other shop looking out for the customer and what can happen early down the road is telling him that it will be around $1000.00 it can be a hard time to get the customer to understand the difference between the two prices.
The sad truth is that many shops give out a low price over the phone so that the customer brings the car in. They take the car apart and then call the customer up and say he needs this or that or something else, even though they knew it from the beginning that those items were most likely needed. But if they had said that over the phone they might have lost the customer to another shop offering a lower price.
