Back from the automotive locksmith.
Cutting the blank was easy, but the guy was skeptical about being able to program a unified remote key to the two older separate key/remote units. Because of posts I've read on the board from 1999 9-5 owners switiching to newer keys, I told him that it would be no problem.
And it was a snap with Tech II. Took all of five minutes total to cut and program. Now I have three working keys and remotes. Haven't noticed any loss of operating range with my new unified remote key.
Cost was exactly what I expected: $50---$25 to cut the blank, another $25 to program all three remotes. I could have perhaps gotten the programming done for free at Saab, but I bought the car on consighnment from an indie Saab dealer 50 miles away, and it was well worth the money to have the job done so quickly and easily.
Total cost: $127.00. Saved me a nice chunk of change compared to the $200+ a Saab dealer would have charged.
One note of caution: "regular" locksmiths can't do this. Only one automotive locksmith in the Twin Cities area (Minnesota) had the necessary high-tech equipment to read the key code from one of my existing keys to cut the blank and Tech II to program the remotes. But then, one locksmith was all I needed.
I'm a happy camper.
