The electronics inside start to glitch and the ECU can't cope with that.
Volvo is battling an even greater numbers of failures that started with the introduction of the electronic throttle body in 1999 models.
On the Volvos though they are covered under the 70K 7 year extended emission warranty but not all dealers want to hear about that and charge the customer full price.
It doesn't seem like the Saabs are covered under the same warranty, why I don't know.
Many of the problems can be solved by cleaning the throttle body but it comes to a point where it needs to be replaced.
On the early Saabs (1999) it was a software update available to help the Trionic ECU cope with a slightly worn throttle body, but that software is already loaded from factory in 2000 if I recall correctly.
If only cleaning out throttle body was part of Saab service recommendations, I think it would have been a lot less idle problems since the fuel injected cars came out in mid 70s. It is so many idle problems through the years that has been created by a dirty throttle body or idle control valve.
