I have a long memory for things that leave me wondering. One of the things I remember from long ago on this boars was a couple of Englishmen discussing how to switch the headlight pattern for Xenon lights from the English pattern to the continental pattern (one them was about to drive the the continent). Something about a switch near the leveling mechanism that you had to insert a screwdriver in and click it two notches. Now the way my mind works, I started wondering what the middle notch was for. So you Americans with Xenons, I would not be surprised if your lights are set in the middle notch and you can switch them over to the European pattern with a screw driver.
Now as to the non-Xenons for the later cars with clear lenses, there is likely nothing you can do. The reflectors might be different but this would make the cost of the European conversion rather steep as you would have to replace the entire light. More likely Stephen is correct and there is no difference between the European and American lights. It is possible with current DOT standards to make headlamps that meet both E-Code and DOT requirements.
