It's an interesting question, whether the engines are forward-compatible. I'll first note there are no 9^5s earlier than '98, and IIRC '99 was the first model year brought to the States (I presume you're not asking about dropping in a 2.3 from a different model, like a Viggen or a 9000).

The 2.3 lpt evolved quite a bit in the first few years, gaining more-robust parts from the hpt Aero engine and thus, yielding more output. I'm curious as to what happens if you drop an earlier engine into a 9^5 that's running more recent engine management software? Would it allow the engine to be pushed too hard, perhaps damaging it? While I've not read about changes to the engine mounts, wiring harnesses, etc., a review of the parts CD might be prudent to make sure they didn't change between the donor car's and the recipient car's model years.

I'll glad yield my speculator's hat to someone who's actually tried it.
