Generally I agree that a margin of safety on the tread is a good idea. However, this depends on the tire to some extent. I had a set of Firestones that I recently replaced. Tire was no where near worn out in tread depth, but the traction had seriously deteriorated as the rubber broke down. On the other hand, the OEM Pirelli Rossos performed very well even down to the 2/32” wear bars (took a while for the replacement process through Saab and they were front tires so the rear of the car remained stable, even in the rain). Nevertheless when the weather gets bad the tread depth is a major safety factor.
