I have a related experience. My Check Engine light was going on and off for months. But, the car ran well, nothing seems out of order.
I finally took the car in, and the problem was the DI Cassette. I replaced it myself and threw the semi-working one in my trunk for an emergency.
I don't think anyone can tell you how long you can drive with the intermittent light, and not have a problem. Again, mine lasted a couple of months (shame on me for not taking the car in sooner).
Concensus on the board seems to be spark plugs or DI Cassette. The following thread is good:

Both are fairly easy to check. The DI Cassette is right on top of your engine - has 4 bolts and a wire harness on the right side. Search the website, it is a 5 minute fix (about $300+ for the part). You shouldn't touch it, though, for a minute after you shut off the car (my safety factor added). Dealers will charge upward of $500.
