Lots of elbow grease, brake and carb cleaner Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: How do you desludge an engine?, adl6009 ![]() |
I had to take the valve cover off and drop the oil pan. After that it was just a matter of starting with a gasket scraper to get the bulk of the goo out and then soak it with carb and brake cleaner and use different kinds of brushes to get it clean.
The timing chain area was the worst one to get to with all the nooks and crannies.
I also open up the fine meshed oil pick up screen a little with an awl to allow bigger particles to pass through so that this problem wont happen so easily again.
The Saab engines used to have an oil pick up screen (read grate) where you could "drive a truck through" but in the newer engines they are using a meshed screen that is so fine that only the purest non contaminated oil can pass through.
By using bigger holes in the screen, if the engine ever start to produce sludge or coked up particles, they will get sucked up by the oil pump and spit out in the oil filter, end of story.
This is what it looked like when my hot parts washer (no it's a machine, not a girl I have employed) was done with the oil pan.
